In the recent past, supply chain demands have concentrated on speed, as the “we want now” generation has increasingly placed procurement under the kind of pressure that would have been unimaginable when Procurement Leaders was in short trousers. We’re reliably informed, however, that a greater focus on sustainability is set to change all that. According to a report by Oracle, the UK is putting its networks of canals, rivers and rail links to better use, leading to the growth of what is now being referred to as “slowgistics” – truly a throwback to a bygone era, and a move that is welcomed by the traditionalists here at Procurement Leaders Towers.
Quote of the week: “At a time when small businesses are finding it difficult to deal with a slowing economy and rising costs, it is shocking that large companies think it is acceptable to use them as an unofficial source of credit,” the Federation of Small Business in UK, takes issue with new plans to extend payment terms.
First we had the paperless office, and now we appear to have the paperless flight. Procurement Leaders understands that Dubai-based airline, Emirates, plans to cut up to one tonne in weight in its fleet of A380 aircraft by ditching its in-flight paper-based entertainment. The move is part of a series of cost-cutting measures by Emirates and has been greeted positively by increasingly environmentally-aware passengers, although presumably not those who forgot to buy a magazine before boarding.
