The Week That Was

Posted: Tuesday, July 15, 2008, 10:06AM

The week that was: 8 July 08 - 15 July 08

As we at Procurement Leaders will testify there’s nothing we like more than a good transfer saga to pass the time during the close season in the Premier League. And whilst speculation surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s move from the North West of England to the rather more tempting surroundings of the Spanish capital promises to rumble on, the ongoing situation has echoes of the dilemma facing procurement organisations operating in China on a daily basis, and will have CPO’s in the Far East nodding in collective recognition. A better deal elsewhere is often enough to tempt local workers to jump ship at the drop of the hat - although admittedly they’re unlikely to be heading to a company offering them over 150 grand a week over five years.

Figure of the week – 11.89 – the current inflation rate in India - and we thought we were having a rough time of it.

Staying with China, and Procurement Leaders has some advice for anyone planning to head to Beijing in the next eight weeks – don’t. For a start the hotels and restaurants will be a nightmare, but secondly in a last ditch effort to cut pollution in the run-up to the games (and, come on they’ve had long enough already haven’t they?) they’ve shut down factories and are forcing residents to drive on alternate days – which by Procurement Leaders’ unerringly accurate (but not always correct) calculations means there will be half the number of taxi’s waiting to ferry you around.
